Description
The seller of this 1965 Land Rover Series IIA 109 Station Wagon 4x4 says it is exactly the same as seen in the movie Out of Africa. He is certainly thinking of a different flick, as that 1985 multiple Oscar winner was set in 1913. But we get the picture. Perhaps he meant Born Free, the hit 1966 film about a British couple that rescues and raises an orphaned lion cub in Kenya. If you are old enough to have watched Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom in the Sixties and Seventies, you likely saw some of these Series IIA Landies roving about there, too. Those big- and small-screen appearances no doubt helped spread the reputation of the Land Rover as a go-anywhere mechanized pack mule long before they became luxury wagons.
Simple as an anvil and able to resist rust with an aluminum body, the Series IIA was built from 1961 to 1971. It was the ideal tool in far-flung places where roads were barely more than trails and weather could turn them into mud rivers.- this 1965 IIA is largely original, with refurbished suspension and seating, and recent mechanical servicing, including a new and completely modified brake system. The 2.25-liter OHV inline four-cylinder engine in the Series IIA was good for about 70 horsepower when new, giving a top speed of barely 60 mph in the Station Wagon model. - the engine to be original, with no rebuilds, and he also believes the miles shown on the odometer to be accurate. - it fires right up and runs strongly, with no smoke. As for leaks and weeps, Just the normal ones from the drain plugs. They're minimal, but inherent for the vehicle'new or old, they leak!
The four-speed manual transmission is said to shift without issues, nor are any needs reported for the two-speed transfer case. The color of this 1965 Land Rover appears to be what the brand called Limestone. The seller, who has owned the vehicle since 2017, does not know a repaint history, but says the finish is in good condition, with normal dings and dents. All glass and windows are described as excellent, with no cracks or scratches. Leaks are inherent for the car, but minimal in the rear, he remarks.
- there is no rust beyond some minor surface oxidation on the frame. Photos show what appears to be a respectably clean underside that could have been repainted at some point. This vehicle is equipped with the Tropical Roof, aka safari roof, which was a two-layer setup with opening vents into the passenger compartment ' old-fashioned air conditioning, as the seller puts it. The roof works as designed and says, The safari window seals are holding up well, but will need replacement at some point. New OEM seals come with the car. - he will also include a huge roof rack that he bought, but did not install. All lighting is said to work properly.- the interior is new, safari style, which may refer to the seating arrangement that includes room for four way-back passengers who are not overly concerned about comfort. The headliner on the forward section of the Tropical Roof appears to be in good condition, per the photos, and the seats appear to be in very good condition. The rubber floormats are present. Photos show a light patina on the rest of the interior, including signs of paint chipping here and there. The heat is affirmed to work, and no issues are reported for the gauges. - Underside photos are always a reminder of how the classic Land Rover's chassis rails look as though they could support a small bridge.- that this Series IIA chassis was refurbished with completely rebuilt control arms, swivel balls, and new springs, bushings, and shocks. The steering box was rebuilt by a professional Land Rover service company.
The brakes, were converted to disc front brakes, with a booster from Land Rover Series III, including a new complete brake tower. There are completely new rear drum brakes incorporating a proportioning valve using all OEM parts. Keep in mind that top speed is about 55 mph'after a minute or so. No issues are reported for the wheels, and he does not know the age of the off-road tires. Additional paperwork includes receipts for the service work described above.
