Description
The GTO is largely credited for kicking off the muscle car era in 1964 and its popularity has endured since. Tri-Power-equipped Goats have been the most popular, as there's something about multiple carburetors that captivates lead-foots and collectors alike. This 1966 Pontiac GTO features the famed induction system as well as the optional automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, and even A/C.
- it was restored about five years ago and he purchased it in the last three years. - the engine and transmission are original to the car, but has not verified that fact. He also doesn't know if the Tri-Power originally came with this GTO. While the seller can't be sure about the veracity of the 48,750 miles on the odometer, the restoration appears recent enough that the car looks to be in very good condition. - The seller was told when he purchased the Pontiac that the 389-cu.in. engine and two-speed automatic transmission were rebuilt, but he wasn't provided with paperwork to offer further details. Nevertheless, the engine runs great and the automatic shifts smoothly, as it should. The hood scoop was opened up and a Ram Air pan was added prior to the seller's purchase, and he has since changed one of the carburetors, but the one he removed goes with the sale.
When starting the engine cold, he advises to do two or three pumps of the gas pedal before turning the key. He adds: It idles high during warm up, then it drops to 650-700 rpm. There's no smoke ever. Only after the car sits for six to eight weeks are there a couple of oil drips on the bellhousing, but there are no leaks at the transmission or rear end. The latter is a Chevrolet 10-bolt, which the seller states has Positraction, and he believes is fitted with a 3.36:1 or a 3.55:1 rear gear ratio. The GTO was repainted in its factory color of Barrier Blue during the restoration and , it has no rust, no swirls, and no blemishes, aside from some very small paint chips on the hood from normal driving. - the glass and seals are excellent, and the lighting works - The seats and interior are original and in excellent condition. All the gauges work, as does the heat, A/C (may be ready for a recharge), and AM radio with optional rear speaker reverb system, but the Rally clock doesn't. He installed an aftermarket wood-rim steering wheel, accessory gauges, and tachometer, but also retained the instrument panel warning lamps and saved the stock wheel to go with the sale. - Like new redline tires are on the optional Rally wheels. - the suspension has not required service in the time he's owned the GTO. - the car drives straight with no wander, the power-assisted steering has no leaks, and the power-assisted drum brakes, which were upgraded to a dual-circuit master cylinder, work well. This 1966 Pontiac GTO offers the cache of Tri-Power induction in its 389, an attention-grabbing Barrier Blue hue with contrasting Parchment interior, the aesthetics of a recent restoration, the easy drivability of an automatic transmission, and A/C for cool summer cruising.
