 Description
The Land Rover Series 2A was built from 1961-'71 in a variety of body types. It was this Series that firmly cemented the vehicle's reputation for the ability to tackle the most difficult terrain and conditions. It turns out they also make good vehicles for fun, but somewhat less demanding, tasks. The seller of this right-hand drive 1962 Land Rover Series 2A 109 Station Wagon uses vintage long-wheelbase open Land Rovers for his Virginia tour company, which visits local breweries and vineyards. Although this closed model did not quite fit his needs, he bought it at the suggestion of a large Land Rover collector in the U.K. who sources vehicles for the business. He told me it was such a special find and in such amazing condition that he strongly recommended I bring it to the U.S. The vehicle is said to have undergone a body-off refurbishment'though not a full restoration'under the guidance of a heritage Series 2 group in spring 2022. Only areas of the vehicle needing attention received it, the seller reports. Work is said to have included installing a new front bulkhead, a new complete wiring harness and examining all mechanical components and servicing where necessary. The Land Rover is equipped with the optional safari roof, a form of ventilation, and features new front and second row seating. It is driver quality, so by no means perfect, but it looks wonderful for its age. The Land Rover Series 2A models used the brand's workhorse 2.25-liter OHV four-cylinder engine, which was rated at just about 70 horsepower by the manufacturer when new.- that he is unsure whether this Land Rover's engine is original. - it is period-correct and was serviced in March 2022, including head removal and inspection. A new Weber ICH 34 carburetor has been fitted, and the seller also reports a new ignition/light switch and a new dip switch. Pull the choke out, turn ignition switch, press the start button and it fires up immediately, he remarks. - that the Landy has the standard Land Rover drips and leaks, appearing to be primarily from transfer case and transmission. The four-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and consistently for a Land Rover.- there was a partial repaint in March 2022. You can see where the repaint and original paint overlap on the safari roof. - the finish as good overall with no dents, dings, or major scratches. He indicates some surface rust showing under paint on the door hinges. All glass is in good condition, and all sliding windows operate smoothly and easily. There are no tears or cracks in the seals, nor any leaks seen. - all lights work - - the wagon's front and second-row seats appear to be new, while the cargo-area bench seats are older and in good shape. - new rubber floormats in the front and center rows, with an older mat in the cargo area that is described in good condition. The seller judges the headliner panel to be in excellent condition and affirms that the four vents for the included optional safari roof are functional. This feature used a kind of ram air effect to channel fresh air from roof level to the cabin. The heat is affirmed to work as designed. All gauges work except for the intentionally disconnected ammeter, and its wiring is still in place in case the next owner feels a need to use it. - The seller affirms that the vehicle had a full suspension service in March 2022. The shocks appear new and are the current replacement items from Britpart, a large U.K.-based Land Rover parts supplier. The bushings appear to be in good condition, the seller states.- the vehicle has new Maxxis radial tires, with DOT date codes of 2020 year visible. The steel wheels are said to be in good condition, with just some surface rust showing in places. The steering response is as it should be and has clearly been refreshed/serviced, as it handles far better than its age would suggest, the seller states. The unassisted drum brakes are consistent and solid. It is presented as refurbished where needed and ready for safari or runs to the winery.
