 Description
From the inaugural year of the car so famously named after the speedy antelope from southern Africa, this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe is described as a fully numbers-matching example that has won multiple accolades, including best in class at an AACA judged show in Waterbury, Vermont, and a star turn on the show field at our own Hemmings Concours d'Elegance. Very strongly presentable, with a Continental kit at the rear, this Impala is said to retain its factory-original interior. It is unusually optioned with the Turboglide transmission, an early planetary-gear take on a three-speed automatic that Chevrolet offered between 1957 and 1961, and which is usually considered a three-speed due to its trio of drive turbines. The car wears a repaint that's believed to be about six years old. - Chevrolet needed more power than its workaday small-block V-8 could provide in the emerging Detroit horsepower race, so it introduced the larger-displacement W series of V-8s in 1958. Displacing 348 cubic inches and dubbed the Turbo-Thrust, the engine had a compression ratio of 9.5:1, received its fuel mixture via a WCFB Carter four-barrel carburetor, and was rated by the manufacturer at 250 horsepower. The body tag of this Canadian-made Impala displays the car's engine number, which matches the stamping on the powerplant under the hood. This Sport Coupe was optioned with the Turboglide automatic transmission. The engine is said to start immediately without smoke, and is said to consume no oil after its valve guide seals were replaced. The transmission is described as functioning perfectly, and a fluid leak is occasionally noted at the tailshaft. The engine bay appears stock and nearly spotless. The precise restoration history of this Impala isn't specified, but its repaint in correct factory colors is said to be about six years old and in very good to excellent condition, with a few nicks to the finish being the only noted blemishes. - that rusted areas ahead of the rear wheel openings were addressed in the past, but makes no statement about any current corrosion. In addition to the Continental kit, the exterior is accessorized with gravel guards, door handle shields and bright exhaust exits. The chrome presents strongly, and no exterior trim appears to be absent. The glass is reported to be original except for the windshield and is said to be in excellent condition. The lighting is described as fully operable. The underside presents as virtually spotless - This Impala's interior is said to be original except for the replacement carpeting, which is described as being in excellent condition. The seating material shows a common level of wear for its age but no tears, rips or soiling. The headliner is also described as excellent, with operable lighting. The painted steel dashboard looks to be in very good condition and appears to be missing none of its knobs or trim. All of the instrumentation is termed operable. So is the AM radio, including its rear speaker. The car retains its original tissue dispenser. The trunk has a rubber mat and looks to be virtually spotless. - - the Impala's chassis was entirely rebuilt in 2020, a process that included replacement of the A-arm bushings, coil springs, and ball joints, among other components. All shock absorbers were replaced. The power steering is said to be leak-free, and the power-assisted drum brakes have the strength to lock the wheels. The wheels are described as free of pitting and vibrations. They mount five tires that have covered about 5,000 miles. I did most of the recent work himself, and describes this prizewinning Impala as remaining in very good overall condition. From its breakthrough design to its first year for the vaunted numbers-matching 348 engine under the hood, this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe seems poised for years of enjoyment, behind the wheel or on the show field.
