Description
It's reported that the current owner of this 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII BJ8 Convertible acquired it in January 2022. The car was refurbished by the previous owner to what the seller describes as #2 condition. The refurbishment is said to have taken place in 1996 and included overhauls of the engine, transmission, interior, electrical [system], and brakes in addition to a repaint. Today though, the seller feels the Austin-Healey is too nice to drive, so it's being offered for sale. Presently, the odometer shows 64,977 miles. The Austin-Healey debuted at the 1952 London Motor Show and was greeted with enormous enthusiasm by the public. At this point, the car was known simply as the Healey 100. The sporty two-seater featured a rigid chassis, a well-sorted suspension, and a glow of success that came from Donald Healey's reputation as a rally driver and boutique car builder. Amongst those in attendance at the motor show was Leonard Lord, who was at the helm of Austin Motors. Lord liked the car and struck a deal with Healey to produce what became known as the Austin-Healey. Over the years, the car evolved from a spartan four-cylinder sports roadster to a more luxurious six-cylinder touring machine. Production ended in 1968.A 2.9-liter OHV inline-six powers this Austin-Healey. The all-cast-iron powerplant receives fuel and air through a pair of SU HD8 carburetors and, when new, was rated at 148 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque. When starting the car from cold, to press twice on the accelerator and turn the key. Once running, the engine idles smoothly, and there's zero smoke on start-up. The engine is believed to be original, as per the BMIHT Certificate. In photos, the engine bay appears very clean and factory correct. The transmission is a four-speed manual unit with an electrically actuated Laycock de Normaville overdrive giving five forward gears. - the transmission shifts well with no clunks, thumps, or odd noises. The overdrive is said to operate correctly. There are zero weeps or leaks from the powertrain. The seller explains that the Healey's dark-green-over-cream paint scheme is not original, but it presents as perfect with zero blemishes, swirls, or scratches. Exterior photos appear to show high-quality, glossy paintwork with no evidence of overspray or corrosion. - all corrosion and rust [were] eliminated. All exterior trim and brightwork look to be present and intact.- the tan convertible top is like new, noting that the car has never been in the rain since restoration and the rear window is crystal clear. All glass is excellent with no scratches or cracks. The car's weather seals are also in excellent condition. Exterior lighting systems are all said to work as intended. New tan leather with green piping covers the slim-back front bucket seats and small rear seats. - that all [seat] adjustments work correctly with full range of motion. - the dark green carpet is as new with no holes, worn areas, or fading, while all interior trim is present and in excellent condition. In photos, the car's interior presents as pristine and unmarked with bright chrome and glossy burl wood trim. Reportedly, a non-standard Moto-Lita steering wheel has been fitted. All gauges work correctly and are connected, , and the heater is described as operational. - The Austin-Healey 3000 uses an independent front suspension system consisting of lower control arms, while the lever-arm damper acts as an upper suspension link. An underslung live axle on leaf springs with lever-arm dampers comprises the rear suspension.- the suspension was rebuilt during the restoration in 1996 to stock specification, and the shocks and bushings are in excellent condition. The manual worm-and-sector steering displays no vagueness or play, ; the steering wheel points straight when driving. The front disc and rear drum brakes have excellent performance, and the pedal feels firm and stops the car quickly in a straight line; it can lock up the tires. Photos of the undercarriage don't appear to show any corrosion. It looks as though this Healey has factory-style knock-off 15-inch chrome wire-spoke wheels fitted with 185HR15 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires of unspecified vintage. DOT date codes are not visible in the provided photos. This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mark III BJ8 Convertible is said to have had a lavish mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment in the hands of its previous owner. The car is being sold with receipts for extensive restoration work, the original jack and tire-changing kit, a letter from the registrar of the Healey Club of America verifying the authenticity and originality of the car, and a British Motor Industry Heritage certificate.
