Description
Designed by Hans Trippel and manufactured by Quandt Group in Germany, the amphibious drop-top Amphicar made a splash in the Sixties and occupies a unique place in automotive history. Only 3,878 were produced during the car's seven-year run, including this 1967 Amphicar 770 Convertible, in Lagoon Blue. It has reportedly been restored, with some light apparent wear, mostly on interior components. The restoration is said to have even included new propellers.Production Amphicar models were powered by the same 1,147-cc inline-four that was used in the Triumph Herald, which was rated at 43 horsepower when new. That's what's under the hood of this example and the seller believes it's the car's original engine. A rebuild history, however, is unknown. It is said to start and run well, and the images show a contemporary alternator for a 12-volt electrical system. The engine is matched with a four-speed manual gearbox, which is said to shift well. There are no reported issues with the propellers or other elements related to propulsion on the water. - the Lagoon Blue finish on this Amphicar is in like new condition, with no blemishes. - the body is rust-free. The exterior trim and chrome appear in very good condition and the convertible top is also reportedly in like new condition. The glass and seals are said to be in good condition, with no leaks, and the exterior lighting is reported to work normally, including the marine-specific navigation lights - The Amphicar's interior has also been restored, and the work included replacement seat covers, new carpet, new rubber mats, and more. Some elements appear in original condition and show some apparent age-related wear, including the steering wheel, which appears to have a crack, the shifter, and some of the knobs. All the gauges are said to work normally, along with the heater. - - the chassis, suspension, and braking elements were restored to stock specs, with no known issues or needs. The front wheels not only turn the vehicle on the road, but in the water, too, and there are no reported performance issues on either surface. On land, the car rolls on Coker Classic whitewall tires mounted on the stock 13-inch wheels. The wheels appear in very good condition and the tires are reportedly in very good shape but appear older. There are visible cracks in the whitewall sections, and no date codes are visible. Providijng supporting documents, too, for this restored 1967 Amphicar 770 Convertible. It's said to be in good-running condition and rust-free'and ready to hit the highway or nearest lake. With a claimed top speed on water of 7 knots, and a claimed top speed on land of 70 mph, it won't be the fastest vessel on land or sea'but when it comes to character and drawing attention, little else can compare to it.
