Description
Stop right now and pay attention, because as we'll explain, this is one rare car. One of the model and nomenclature changes that occurred at Packard in its final years came in 1954, when the three premium models using Packard's biggest straight-eight were given individual names based on their body styles. The two-door hardtop with the 359-cu.in. engine thus became the Pacific, a one-year premium model produced to the tune of just 1,189 examples. This 1954 Packard Pacific has been upgraded with a newer Borg-Warner manual transmission with three speeds plus overdrive, and has had its interior renewed with OEM fabrics and leather. This Pacific has a high level of factory equipment, too, including power windows and a power antenna. The car is said to have needed nothing recently, and is reported to be both mechanically sound and highly original. The engine in the Pacific was Packard's L-head straight-eight, displacing 359 cubic inches. With a compression ratio of 8.7:1, the engine received its fuel mixture via a Carter four-barrel carburetor and was rated by the manufacturer at 212 horsepower. The engine in this Pacific is said to be original to the car, to retain its original factory aluminum cylinder head, and start readily. The two-speed Ultramatic transmission in this car has been replaced by a newer Borg-Warner unit with three forward speeds plus overdrive, which has been rebuilt. Occasional drips from the powertrain are noted. The engine bay appears stock and impressively clean.- this Pacific was repainted three years ago in its original factory colors using PPG two-stage finishes. - the Pacific as having a solid original body with no blemishes, while adding that it currently has little if any rust. The chrome appears to be complete and in very good condition, including the side spear, which look to be straight and undamaged. The hood ornament is specific to the large-engine 1954 Packard models. The Pacific's glass is all original and reported to be in good condition with exception to one small crack at the very top of driver's side window. All the exterior lighting is said to work properly as original. The underside is impressively clean with scant evidence of surface corrosion - The seat facings and interior panels are said to be newly covered in Pacific-specific upholstery using OEM materials. These materials present as new, with no evidence of tears or wear. The front seat has been fitted with seat belts. The carpeting is also said to be new and presents as in excellent shape. The headliner is reportedly original and said to be free of wrinkles and sags. The painted steel dashboard looks all but flawless, with excellent small controls and no indications that any trim is missing. The gauges present well, are said to be fully functional, and the Pacific also has its factory AM radio. The hydraulically operated window lifts are said to all operate properly. The car's heater is functional. The air conditioner, which incorporates an original Frigidaire unit in the trunk, is inoperable. The carpeted trunk presents cleanly. - - chassis service has been limited to general maintenance, with the bushings and power-assisted brakes reported to be in good operating condition.- the shock absorbers are newly replaced, and reports a slight leak from the power steering. The radial whitewalls are reported to be several years old. Documentation includes invoices from vendors and for restoration services. An honest rarity, from the sunset years of a great American independent, this 1954 Packard Pacific presents impressively and will surely offer its next owner that unique Packard driving experience.
