Description
With 540 cubic inches cranking out approximately 720 naturally aspirated
horsepower, this 1972 Dodge Challenger is a street or strip machine that has
served as the seller's cruise-night attention-getter for nearly 24 years. It
began life as a gold Challenger Rallye model, with a 340 engine, but had
been modified prior to the seller's purchase of the car, in 1998. Since then,
, it has been driven very few miles, mostly to cruise
events and for local drives. While the car previously spent time on the drag
strip, the seller notes it hasn't been down the quarter-mile in many years
and never since the installation of the Indy Cylinder Heads RB Street Master
Engine. Reportedly, the car has all the equipment to support quarter-mile
passes. In fact, there's a seemingly endless list of high-performance
components and enhancements, and the seller notes the car runs and drives
well. All of the parts were professionally built or installed
about this modified E-body, adding, it's both a consistent head-turner and
conversation starter.
Under the lightweight, lift-off fiberglass hood, is the
aforementioned Indy Cylinder Heads 540-cu.in. RB big-block engine. The
compression ratio is a pump-gas-friendly 10.75:1 and the bottom end
features a forged rotating assembly, along with a Comp Cams solid roller
camshaft. Aspiration comes from a dual-plane intake manifold that
distributes the air/fuel mixture generated by a single 850-cfm Holley Mighty
Demon carburetor into a set of Indy cylinder heads. There are also ceramic-
coated headers, an SFI-certified flexplate, a Mezeire electric water pump, an
MSD Pro Billet distributor and more. - the engine was
dyno tested at 720 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 680 lb-ft of torque at 5,100
rpm. - the engine starts and runs well and has only a couple
of hundred miles on it. The engine is also set up for nitrous oxide, with a
separate fuel cell, fuel pump, solenoids, wiring, etc. but has not yet been
fully completed.
Additional powertrain components include a custom, professionally built 727
three-speed automatic transmission with a 3,500-rpm-stall torque converter
and manual shift kit, along with a 4.10-geared Dana 60 rear axle. A
comprehensive list of drivetrain components is included in the accompanying
photos. Per the Y3 code on the fender tag, this Challenger was originally painted
Light Gold, but the color was changed to Prowler Yellow in 2000, with
complementing T/A stripes and a flat-black hood.- the
overall condition of the paintwork is excellent, with only a few minor
blemishes. Those blemishes are reportedly difficult to notice, but the seller
notes a slight dent on the passenger-side front bumper, along with a
portion of the plastic for the stock fog lights is broken off in the housing. All
the glass and seals are said to be in excellent condition, with no scratches
or cracks in the windshield, and while the headlamps, taillights and stop
lamps are reported functional, the seller notes the turn signal stalk is missing
from the steering column, so the operation of the signal is unconfirmed. In
addition to the T/A stripes and lift-off hood, the car also wears OEM 'Cuda-
style round fog lamps in front and rear window louvers. - this Challenger's body is rust-free - Inside, this Challenger's cockpit is all business, with racing front seats (a five-
point harness for the driver and a four-point harness for the front passenger),
multiple Auto Meter gauges, a Winters shifter, a padded roll bar, and more.
All are said to be in very good condition. The same goes for the carpet,
, who indicates that some additional work would
benefit its fitment. The front seats are in a fixed position and are mounted on
an adjustable slide, but the functionality of that mechanism is unknown.
Additionally, the headliner is said to be sag-free, but has a few splits of
varying lengths. - several stock components have been
sacrificed for the car's drag-racing aesthetic, including the heater and radio.
The driver's side A-pillar molding was also removed to accommodate the
Auto Meter Monster tachometer. The speedometer is inoperative, as is the
fuel gauge, but with the fuel gauge the issue is due to the original fuel tank
having been replaced with a 12-gallon fuel cell that's mounted in the trunk.
The seller adds that the rear seats, roll bar, rear decking, and window
handles are all in excellent condition and align with the mini-tubbing in the
rear. - The chassis, suspension and brake components have been largely modified
or upgraded to accommodate the car's performance capabilities. Those
upgrades include subframe connectors, a driveshaft safety loop, rear
coilover-shocks, and traction bars. The rear wheelhouses have also been
mini-tubbed to make room for 28 x 13.5-inch Mickey Thompson E/T Street
tires. They complement Michelin P205/75R15 tires up front, with all the tires
mounted on classic 15-inch Weld Racing Draglite wheels. The wheels and
tires are said to be in excellent condition. The car also has manual steering
and power-assisted front disc, rear drum brakes. There is some play noted in
the steering and the brakes are said to perform very well. some cracking in some of the suspension system's older bushings. Additional documentation for this 1972 Dodge Challenger includes
accompanying images that break down the specific components included in
the engine assembly, as well as additional parts added throughout. With the
sound of its 540-cu.in. big-block engine and race-ready stance augmented by
its tall hood scoop, the soul of this modified E-body exudes both power and
attention. The seller sums up the experience of this unique Challenger by
saying, The greatest aspect of this car is that it's a dual-purpose street
machine with singular, unmistakable high-performance attitude ready for the track as well!
