Description
Just as manufacturers had to produce a minimum production number to qualify model for NASCAR and NHRA competition, so too did they for SCCA road racing ' specifically the Trans-Am Series. That's how the 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A was born, and this example, which is being sold for an estate settlement, is believed to be authentic, based on model-specific content detailed on the fender tag, including the E55-code 340 Six Pack engine, N44-code special side-exit exhaust, N94-code hood, J45-code hood pins, V6H-code stripes. All T/A models had a second fender tag that simply read Trans Am, and it's in place here. This car appears to have been repainted and shows some cosmetic needs inside, outside and under the hood, but appears reasonably straight. Dodge produced 2,399 of these cars, with 989 equipped, like this one, with a four-speed manual transmission. - According to the J in the VIN, this vintage E-body was equipped with the 340 Six Pack engine, which featured a trio of Holley two-barrel carburetors atop the high-performance small-block V-8, which was rated at 290 horsepower and 345 lb-ft of torque. It is unknown whether it is the original engine or if it has a rebuild history, but the seller reports it starts and idles well, with no smoke. Powertrain leaks are unknown. The photos show a set of older, oxidized exhaust headers, and some splits and cracks in the foam seal for the cold-air induction system. Paint is also flaking off the engine in a couple of places. The engine is backed by a four-speed transmission, but its performance is unverified. Based on visible overspray around the door jamb identification label, it appears this Challenger has been repainted the same FE5-code Bright Red color indicated on the fender tag. A history of bodywork or rust repair is unknown, but the paintwork appears in good, driver condition, with no noted blemishes from the seller. Most T/A models came with a black grille surround, but some were Argent Grey, as seen on this example. All came with a rear spoiler, which is in place on this car. Dual front spoilers were also common on T/A models, but were optional, and not worn on this car.- the glass and seals are in good condition, with no reported cracks or chips in the windshield. - The black leather interior of this Challenger appears to be in good condition, but shows wear in areas and a sizable apparent crack or hole in the dash pad that has been covered. The seat covers are said to be free of holes or excessive wear, but the carpet appears worn and discolored in areas. The steering wheel and pistol-grip shifter also show wear. There is also an aftermarket oil-pressure gauge mounted on the dash, as well as an aftermarket tach mounted on the steering column.- the gauges are believed to be functional, except for possibly the odometer. The heater is reported functional and the original radio has been replaced with a modern head unit. - The chassis, suspension and brake systems are believed to have been maintained in stock condition, with no reported issues or needs, but no known recent service history, either. The car has power steering and power brakes, and the seller reports the brakes work well, with a firm pedal. It also wears Rallye wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The age of the tires is unknown, but they're said to have plenty of tread. Despite some cosmetic needs, this appears to be an authentic 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A ' and one of 989 such cars produced with a four-speed transmission to match the sportiness of its 340 Six Pack V-8. It offers the next owner the option of driving the seller-described #4-condition muscle car as-is, or taking it to the next level with a restoration.
