 Vehicle Description
The fabled Advance Design pickups from General Motors were marketed through both Chevrolet (as the 3100) and GMC (where the same truck was called the 100) dealerships in 1951. Like any number of Advance Design pickups down through history, this 1951 GMC 100 half-ton truck has been the subject of some mild customization, which in this pickup's case was completed some 20 years ago, in a process described as a full cab- and bed-off build. The truck has a larger, non-original engine than GMC installed in 1951, and is said to have covered around 10,000 since the restoration and engine rebuild. Originally, this truck had the 228-cu.in. version of GM's long-lived OHV straight-six. That engine has been replaced in the past with a larger, 235.5-cu.in. straight-six from the same engine family, with full-pressure lubrication, which GMC adopted beginning in 1954. With a compression ratio of 7.5:1, the GMC 235 received its fuel mixture through a Rochester one-barrel carburetor, and was rated by the factory at 112 horsepower. The engine in this truck is mated to a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission. The engine is said to start properly and idle well without smoke when the choke is engaged. The transmission's functions are described as excellent. No leaks are reported from the powertrain. The engine bay appears as stock and presents as nearly spotless. The overall Dark Cherry finish on this GMC is believed to date to the same point as its restoration, but the seller shares there there is -brand new- paint on the hood, cab, tail gate, doors (exterior and inside) as well as the gloss black running boards. The finish is described as being in good to excellent condition, with blemishes said to be limited to a few scratches. - there is no rust on the vehicle. The truck's chromed bumpers, grille and brightwork on the cab look to be in very good condition. The cargo bed looks to be free of dents, and has what appears to be a redone wooden bed floor and stainless fasteners. The seller's plan was to paint the boards black while leaving the steel strips in their metal finish. The glass in the five-window cab is reported to be in excellent condition, no water leaks are reported inside the cab, and all the lighting is said to be in proper working order - This GMC 100 has had its vinyl-covered bench seat replaced with a modern bench covered in gray tweed-type fabric and is now equipped with seat belts. The seat is described as being in excellent condition, and shows no visible rips or signs of excess wear.- recently installing a new aftermarket heater. This truck features electric windshield wipers. The cab floor is now covered with a new rubber mat. The steel dashboard retains its bright insert and small controls, none of which appear to be missing.- the gauges are fully functional, and that the GMC's factory AM/FM radio has been restored. - the chassis components of this GMC have been upgraded with a new steering assembly, new brakes, and new suspension components, including shock absorbers. The steering is said to have no free play. The aftermarket chrome wheels and all-season radial tires are also described as new. The underside of the truck is impressively clean and shows only minor indications of surface corrosion in a few locations. A variety of documents and photos of the restoration will be included. A second hood, recently painted in Dark Cherry, will also be included. It is a single-piece hood, unlike the two-piece with the chrome center strip currently installed. Still very presentable, and with some added displacement, this 1951 GMC 100 half-ton appears to be fresh cosmetically and mechanically.
