 Vehicle Description
The owner of this 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II BJ7 2 Convertible writes that my father purchased the Healey from the original owner in 1966 or '67 and drove and cared for it for many years. The car has remained in her family ever since. She identifies that a major restoration was undertaken in 1990 that included an exterior refinish in the original Ice Blue color, with new leather seat covers installed in 1997. After she inherited the car in 2015, a documented inspection was undertaken by a British car specialist. A new top was also installed in 2015, and suspension service was performed from 2015-'18.The 2.9-liter OHV inline-six powering the 1961-'63 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II BJ7, with 9:1 compression and two 1.75-inch SU HS6 carburetors, produced 132 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 167 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm, per the manufacturer when new. Gear changes are handled by a four-speed manual transmission and this example also features an optional overdrive. The engine is original to the car and runs great, the owner notes. A rebuild in 2015 was approximately 5,000 miles ago. The engine is reported to start easily with the fuel pump, starter button, and accelerator and a puff of smoke that clears quickly. The gearbox is reported to shift easily through all gears, including overdrive. No leaks or weeps are identified. An electronic ignition and newer starter have replaced the originals, which will also be provided with the sale. A major restoration was undertaken in 1990 that included refinishing the exterior in the original Austin-Healey color of Ice Blue. The quality of the finish is described as good, with no swirls. Four blemishes are noted and clearly identified in the photos provided: two dings on the driver's rear fender, a scrape and small dings at the passenger's rear fender, and a paint crack on the passenger's door. All brightwork appears complete and polished to a clear shine. The glass is described as good, with no scratches or cracks. The blue vinyl convertible top was new in 2015, and opens, closes, and latches as intended, with no missing components in the owner's words. All seals are complete and in good working order, with no evidence of water leaks per the owner. All lights are reported to work properly - The owner writes that the blue leather seats with white piping were recovered in 1997 and show some wear, but no cracks or tears. The door panels and dashboard are covered in soft vinyl, with a banjo-style three-spoke steering wheel mounted on a telescoping steering column facing the driver. -All gauges are connected - according to the owner, who notes that the speedometer was new in 2015, but discloses that -the fuel gauge sometimes works, sometimes does not.- All interior trim is identified as complete. The carpet is described as good, with no holes or worn areas. No modifications have been made to the original interior, and there is no radio, heater, or air conditioning'as when the Healey was new. - The owner identifies no play in the unassisted rack-and-pinion steering. She also notes that the shocks were rebuilt in August 2015 and display no leaks, or cracked or damaged bushings. A new left rear leaf spring was installed when suspension service was last performed in June 2018.  No issues are identified with the front disc and rear drum brakes. The original 15-inch wire wheels were refinished in the original silver paint. Some Healey shake from the wheels is described by the owner, and there are some hammer dings on the knock off wings. The unidentified 165/80R15 radial tires are reported as new in August 2015, although DOT date codes confirming the age of the tires are not visible in the photos. Documentation also provided with the sale of this 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk II BJ7 2 Convertible includes records of all work done to inspect and maintain the car when it was inherited in 2015 and, to the best of the owner's knowledge, invoices for parts ordered and work done from 1990-'98. no work was done on the car in the period from 1998-2015.
