 Vehicle Description
Wood is good is a popular phrase among woodie wagon owners, but when the wood is as nice as it is on this 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster street rod, that's extra good. It's also much more rare to see a Chevrolet woodie station wagon than its Ford counterpart. This street rod woodie has been seen all over the country as the seller has driven it to 33 states during his 45-year ownership. His goal was to preserve the car's original beauty while adding modern drivetrain reliability and air-conditioned passenger comfort. The car has won awards at all kinds of street-rod events. Constant maintenance and improvements have kept this woodie looking fresh and ready to hit the road with its next owner. - A 396-cu.in. Chevrolet big-block from a 1969 Caprice (originally rated at 325 horsepower) was rebuilt about 3,000 miles ago. It was slightly over-bored to 403-cu.in. and equipped with a roller camshaft, new internal components, an Edelbrock intake manifold and carburetor. The cylinder heads were fitted with stainless valves so 87 octane gas could be used. There is a new aluminum radiator and electric fan with a shroud. Cold starts rely on the electric fuel pump. As for leaks and weeps, , Long periods will get a few drops, but it's pretty dry for a Chevrolet big-block. - the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic transmission is basically stock, but it shifts excellently. Under the seller's long-term ownership, the paint and wood have been restored three times with each version made to better the previous work. The most recent paint job was done in 2016. The wood was refinished and Dave Martin in Wisconsin installed new mahogany panels in 2017. The door and tailgate seals were replaced when the woodwork was done. - the paint quality as near perfect. - the vinyl roof material looks as new. - Perry Nichols at Perry's Top and Trim did all the seats, seatbacks, and surrounds in English leather. The metal dashboard appears to have been expertly painted to resemble woodgrain. VDO gauges are used. A Corvette tilt steering column has a custom steering wheel. The backside of the front seat features two fold-down trays. Custom-made floormats protect the carpet. There is a Pioneer stereo/CD player with Alpine speakers. The Vintage Air underdash air-conditioning system uses R-134a refrigerant. - the wood roof bows as being varnished like a bowling alley. - Front suspension upgrades are from Fat Man Engineering and include heavy-duty tubular A-arms, rack-and-pinion steering, a sway bar, gas shocks, and large disc brakes. The rear suspension uses components from Chassis Engineering to support the Oldsmobile rear axle. The gear ratio is 2.93:1, which would seem appropriate for all the highway traveling this car has done. Polyurethane bushings have been installed. The tires are newer Goodyear Wranglers mounted on American Racing polished 15-inch five-spoke rims.- that the car steers like a new car. The woodie has been on many long trips including 2,180 miles in seven days last year for the Hot Rod Power Tour. Owned this 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster street rod for 45 years. In that time, he has driven it to 33 states, which speaks loudly to the car's driveability and reliability. Seller reports the car has had an NSRA Safety 23 sticker every year since inception including 2021. Additional documentation includes all the paperwork and receipts for the car, plus a couple boxes of extra parts, a custom-made bra, and a Beverly Hills all-weather car cover.
