 Vehicle Description
The seller of this 1974 Triumph TR6 Convertible states that he is the roadster's second owner. - the car is originally from California, has never had any rust, and has been repainted. It is said to also have a rebuilt engine, new interior, and other mechanical updates, detailed below. - the Triumph is a great running car and fun to drive, and that he is selling it because he drives it infrequently. The last classic six-cylinder British roadster, the Triumph TR6 arrived for 1969 and was essentially a re-bodied TR5 (called TR250 in America). The TR6 shared the TR250's independent trailing-arm rear suspension and 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine. The Karmann-designed TR6 followed the general outline of the Michelotti-designed TR5/TR250 and even used its doors, but the TR6's overall look seemed more contemporary. The TR6 was a success for Triumph, especially in the U.S. market, which imported more than 75,000 of the nearly 92,000 built over seven years. The TR6's 2.5-liter inline-six was an all-iron pushrod unit, with a long stroke that favored torque over horsepower. U.S.-bound TR6 models used dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and offered 104 horsepower. The bigger news was 143 lb-ft of torque at a relatively low 3,000 rpm, a solid level of twist for a 2,400-pound roadster. It also had an alluring, deep-baritone exhaust note, which is likely amplified a bit on this car by the aftermarket tuned exhaust, the seller indicates. He states that the engine is original and has about 1,000 miles since the rebuild. For a cold start, he explains, You must pull the choke, and it's best to let it warm up a little before driving. The seller affirms there is no smoke but reports a little weeping, but nothing in excess and no leaks. The four-speed manual transmission has a new clutch and shifts well. To meet U.S. bumper regulations, the 1974 TR6 sprouted large black bumper overriders, and some owners removed them or installed the older bumper for a cleaner look, as this car has. - the TR6 was repainted in 2014 and that the finish remains in good condition. As far as body blemishes, the owner says that there are a few rock chips and a small scratch on top of the driver's side door, but no dents. This vehicle was also equipped with a new convertible top and a new windshield in 2014, and the side glass is original with no problems, states the seller. - there are no leaks, the vehicle has new gaskets and no rust issues. The lighting is said to work fine. The TR6 cockpit exemplified the classic British roadster character, featuring a genuine wood veneer dash, full set of gauges, cut-pile carpeting and leather-wrapped steering wheel. On this car, a Moto-Lita wheel has replaced the original, a popular in-period modification. The seats have new vinyl covers, and the vehicle features a new carpet kit, the seller reports. The TR6's heat works fine. Gauges are said to work, too, but with a speedometer needle that jumps. The aftermarket radio works well and the locks and windows are likewise to be working as designed. - A suspension service was performed in 2014, who says the alignment ball joints were replaced where needed. Shocks were also new in 2014, with tube shocks replacing the original rear lever-type units.- no damaged or cracked bushings. The TR6 has new brakes that will lock up the wheels. The TR6's 15x5.5-inch styled-steel wheels were tall for the day, allowing the tires to fill out the wheel wells. Although the seller states that the Coker Classic redline tires have excellent tread, they are more than 10 years old. The manual steering is said to have no play. I will provide receipts for work performed on the car under his ownership. This 1974 Triumph TR6 was among the best performing of the affordable British roadsters, and it took that tradition as far as tightening regulations and waning demand allowed. A reportedly rebuilt engine, newer top and interior, and other recent work seem to have put this Triumph on its way to backroad fun.
