 Vehicle Description
Some automotive enthusiasts choose to build their own dream car using as its foundation a lower-cost model of the desired make and year. Such is the case with this entry-level 1958 Pontiac Chieftain convertible that was transformed into a top-of-the-line Bonneville. The seller, who is representing an educational trust that owns the car, says, The car, along with many parts, was purchased by my dad in 2006 from its owner in Texas. My dad contracted with A-1 Restoration Services to conduct a full restoration of the vehicle with the intent of using 1958 Bonneville parts to build a 'clone.' The 370-cu.in. V-8 engine, which may be original to the car, but hasn't been confirmed, was rebuilt. An Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor was installed during that 2006 process. The seller uses a shot of starter fluid for cold starts, but says the car starts easily once it's warm. There is some weeping noted at the rear differential and a clunk when shifting into reverse, but the Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission shifts well when driving, he adds. According to the cowl data-plate codes, this Pontiac was originally two-tone Persian Black with Graystone White accents (coves) and a black convertible top, but is now Rangoon Red with Graystone White accents, and a white top. In 2006, the body was restored and a new top was installed, who also states that both are in very good to excellent condition with some small, but very minor scratches in the finish, and minor rust spots on the undercarriage. Bonneville callouts and body trim were added. A continental kit for the spare tire was also installed. The original glass was retained, but the rear windows and regulators, which come with the car, need to be installed. The door seals are said to be in very good condition and the lights work, except for the right turn signal - This convertible was built with a gray and silver interior per the trim code on the data plate, but now features Bonneville-design upholstery and door panels in red and ivory. The seat materials are in very good condition, with no cracks or tears, who adds that the carpet is excellent. The power convertible top and the gauges work as they should, but the heater and the Wonderbar AM radio don't. - that the power-assisted steering operates well, the suspension was rebuilt in 2006, and the bushings, shocks, and power-assisted drum brakes remain in very good condition. In 2007, the tires were replaced and still have full tread remaining. Additional documentation includes the receipts and before-and-after photos for the full restoration completed in 2008. This 1958 Pontiac Chieftain convertible Bonneville tribute car is poised to provide upscale top-down cruising for a new caretaker.
