 Vehicle Description
Even rarer than the factory supercars of the Sixties are those that survived the era unmodified and with their original engines. If the original owner didn't blow up the engine on the drag strip, subsequent owners almost certainly modified or altered what was simply a used car by the end of the decade and well into the Seventies. That makes a find such as this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS 409/425 four-speed all the more unique. After 57 years, it has survived largely untouched, with what the seller ' who's owned the car for 30 years ' believes is the original engine. Yes, it has been repainted, but car itself remains a stock, apparently never modified example of what was once one of the most formidable forces on the street and strip. - Because Chevrolet did not stamp partial VINs on the blocks for this model in 1964, it is impossible to say it is a numbers-matching powertrain, but the seller believes it is the original, dual-quad 409/425 engine, based on the engine block's suffix code T080 2QB, which indicates the engine was produced at the Tonawanda factory in August 1963 and was a 425-hp 409 with a manual transmission.- the engine runs well, but the original solid-lifter camshaft and valvetrain were updated with hydraulic cam and lifters, which has improved drivability. The original camshaft and lifters are included with the sale. - the four-speed gear box shifts smoothly and that the only powertrain leaks include an occasional drip from the engine's oil pan. - the Tuxedo Black paint was resprayed prior to his purchase of the car 30 years ago and it remains in excellent condition, having been stored in a heated garage when not on the road for those three decades within the dry climate of Idaho.- there are no dents, no swirl marks and no rust in the body, but a few paint nicks and chips are noted. Further, the seller notes some of the glass is original and, while there are no cracks noted, there are some minor scratches. The seals are said to be in good condition and all of the lighting to be functional. Inside, the silver vinyl interior is reported to be original, unrestored and unmodified, apart from replacement carpet. The seats appear to be in very good condition for their age, with a few minor cracks noted in the seat covers. The carpet was replaced prior to the seller's purchase and appears to remain in good condition, while the headliner is said to be original and is also in good condition, with no sagging.- all of the gauges are functional, but that the tachometer has intermittent issues. Also, the car is said to retain its original Delco AM radio. - - the chassis appears to be rust-free, while the suspension components have been maintained in stock specification.- having no recent suspension or brake work performed, but that the car drives and stops well, with no apparent needs or issues. The car rolls on the factory 14-inch steel wheels and SS wheel covers, wrapped in old BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires. - the appearance of the tread is like new and that the car drives without vibration on the highway, but that the tires were on the car when he purchased it 30 years ago. Additional paperwork for this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS 409/425 includes receipts for service performed over the years. It appears the years have been kind to this full-size, dual-quad supercar. A repaint, replacement carpet and other service work have apparently been the extent of the work performed on it ' and its 409 engine appears to be original. Given the high rate of attrition among its contemporaries, that makes this surviving 409 Chevy all the more remarkable.
