Description
The muscle car movement was in full swing in 1969 and Chevrolet, the most popular make in the land, was in the center of all the action. A key component to Chevy's huge popularity was the mighty 396-cu.in. big-block V-8. It came in several horsepower configurations, but they all had gobs of tire-frying torque.
This 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Sport Coupe caught the attention of the seller when it was new and he dreamt of owning one someday. That day came in 2000 when he found this Garnet Red SS 396 stored in a New York garage. He bought it and spent the last two decades restoring and enjoying it. Retirement plans have changed his lifestyle, so the Chevelle is now ready for a new owner. -- that the 325-hp 396-cu.in. big-block V-8 in this Chevelle was sourced from a 1968 Camaro. It was rebuilt in 2002 and has approximately 5,000 miles on it since. The rebuild reportedly included new pistons and rings, bearings, a Comp Cams camshaft, Edelbrock Performer intake and carburetor, rebuilt 1970 cylinder heads, Hooker headers, and an MSD distributor.- no smoke on startup and no engine leaks. The Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt with a 2,800-rpm stall speed torque converter and has excellent shifting, . The exhaust system uses Flowmaster mufflers and the original gas tank was replaced with a new reproduction one.- that when he personally refinished the car in 2007, the body was rust-free, adding specifically that no rust was found under the vinyl top nor in the floors. The respray in the original Garnet Red was done in a single-state acrylic.- the paint condition remains very good, although there are a few scratches and blemishes. He notes a small dent on the right-side front fender by the door and the right-side lower rear panel. The glass appears to be scratch-free, in the provided photos, and the weatherstripping was replaced when the car was painted. The black vinyl top was replaced at the time, too. - The black vinyl front and rear bench seats are in good condition,- there is no rust on the floorboards. - the headliner was replaced and the instruments are in good condition. The carpet is rated as fair with a small open area on the transmission tunnel. The car was originally equipped with air conditioning, but a previous owner took it off. A newer sound system is in use, but the dashboard is uncut. -- the following work performed to the suspension and chassis: The complete front suspension has been replaced with new ball joints, tie rods, bushings, and shocks. A new power brake booster was installed and the front disc brakes have been rebuilt. The power steering lines and steering column rag joint were also replaced. New springs were installed in back and the rear axle was rebuilt and fitted with 3.42:1 Positraction gears. The original SS wheels are shod with four-year-old BFGoodrich tires with 75-percent remaining tread. Additional paperwork includes many receipts accumulated , service manuals, and an NCRS certification verifying the original production date of February 24, 1969. I have owned this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Sport Coupe for 21 years and is selling it because he recently retired and plans to travel.
