 Description
Somewhat the muscle car equivalent of an Erector Set, this 1969 Ford Mustang SportsRoof requires final assembly. Its body, paint, and chassis restoration work, as well as the powertrain sourcing and rebuilding have mostly been completed. Yet the new body and cabin wiring harnesses and the transmission haven't been installed, the interior remains bare, and other areas still have to be put together. I bought it as a father/son project ' our third. It's a 428CJ R-code with a rebuilt date-code-correct engine and transmission with many OEM parts. The restoration was well documented from the start. We have completed all the hard work that takes most of the time, and it's all done to perfection. The highly desirable extra-cost 335-horsepower Cobra-Jet Ram Air 428-cu.in. V-8 engine also included an iconic shaker hood scoop. In this instance, the engine and optional C-6 transmission were long gone when the seller took ownership of the Mustang about a decade ago, so he did the next best thing. He chased down correct date-coded Cobra-Jet engine parts and a transmission to have professionals recreate both. The block was bored minimally to clean up the cylinder walls, and CJ-specific parts were used in the rebuild wherever applicable, right down to the Holley carburetor and the exhaust manifolds. Aftermarket pistons were employed, however. A stock-spec torque converter and rebuilt C-6 three-speed automatic transmission are included, and a replacement 9-inch rear axle featuring Traction-Lok and the same 3.25:1 ratio gears that the Ford was originally equipped with were installed. An engine wiring harness, fuel lines, radiator, and an exhaust system are among the items that will have to be bought by the new owner. All the rust was removed from the car, as documented in the pictures, the seller notes. There are no swirls and the quality is perfect, of the Candyapple Red paint that was professionally applied two years ago. He does, however, report one small 3/8-inch scratch above the driver's-side front headlight. The glass and seals are new, and the lighting has yet to be installed. Front and rear spoilers and the Mach 1 stripe and paint treatment were added to this SportsRoof (non-Mach 1) Mustang during its rotisserie restoration - When the seller purchased this Ford, the standard red interior had already been removed, and it didn't come with the car. He has since had the instruments and their panel restored, and they, along with the dash pad, console, new sill plates, and an interior master fastener kit, come with the Mustang. He also found the seatback of a fold-down rear seat, which was optional, but not ordered on this example, to include in the sale. - the buyer will need to source bucket seats and the rear seat bottom, upholstery, a headliner, carpet and insulation, door and interior quarter panels, a radio, and some knobs and trim items. - - the undercarriage was restored and detailed, and new parts and bushings for the suspension, power steering, and power disc/drum brakes were bolted on, as were larger-than-stock 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels and more modern BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. - some of these systems' installations need to be finished. Additional documentation includes a Marti Report, and pictures and receipts for the restoration. Soon, it seems, a new owner can experience the satisfaction of completing a project car by bolting the rest of this 1969 Ford Mustang SportsRoof 428CJ Ram Air back together.
